US$2 million was won by USP Confucius Institute last year and the money will be directed to the renovation of their old building and construction of a new one which will include modern facilities.

The investment was a success after USP Confucius Institute participated in a competition with 500 Confucius institutes around the world.

Local Director Confucius Institute at USP Joan Lee says the Confucius Institute headquarters in Beijing offers awards every year to Confucius institutes around the world where the USP based institute was the winner last year.

Lee says that the new facility will allow them to reach out to other countries in the region as they have recently converted one of their credit courses to be a fully online course.

The development is also expected to boost the number of students enrolled at the institute in years to come.

President Jioji Konrote was the chief guest at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Model Confucius Institute earlier today.
