UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced last night that the UK has raised its threat level to "critical" ‑‑ the highest level ‑‑ for the first time in a decade.
The prime minister also confirmed the government had triggered "Operation Temperer", a long‑standing emergency plan to put soldiers into key public locations to support armed police in protecting the public.
Military personnel may also be seen at other events such as concerts over the coming weeks and would work under the command of police officers.
Salman Abedi has been named by British Police as the suspected suicide bomber who killed 22 people and injured 59 including children as young as 8 years old, at Manchester Arena yesterday.
The blast happened following a pop concert by the US singer Ariana Grande.
So‑called Islamic State has said it was behind the Manchester attack, but this has not been verified.
