After having spoken on phone three times, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump finally met in person today.
Modi and Trump had a one‑to‑one meeting, followed by a delegation level talk and will now head for a cocktail reception and a working dinner.
Modi is the first foreign leader to be hosted by the Trump administration.
They spoke about bilateral trade, peace in Afghanistan and India's concerns over Pakistan‑based terror outfits.
Senior administration officials who prepared Trump for today's meeting said Trump is aware of the delicate balance with India and Pakistan, but will look to treat the 1.3 billion person country like the defense ally it is, including by selling the kind of technology that the United States provides to its closest allies and partner.
Trump thanked Modi for his purchases of military equipment during a meeting in the White House's Cabinet Room.
Modi, likewise, heralded Trump for the "respect" they have shown him and India.
