The trial of the 25‑year‑old mother who allegedly attempted to murder her four‑year‑old‑son last year has started in the Suva High Court.
Shahista Devi is charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of criminal intimidation.
It is alleged that Devi tried to murder her son and threatened to kill her mother in law.
The alleged incident happened on 2nd February last year in Nakasi.
First prosecution witness, Madhur Lata who is Devi's mother‑in‑law told the court that Devi started an argument after she had taken out butter from the fridge and given to Devi's two children who were hungry in the morning since there was no breakfast for them.
Lata told the court that her two grandchildren were hungry and she gave them biscuits, butter and tea.
Lata says Devi woke up after 8am and started questioning as to who took out her butter.
Lata told the court that Devi also fought with her son and her son had to prepare the breakfast.
Lata told the court that her son had told her that Devi did not want to cook.
The trial will continue before Justice, Riyaz Hamza.
