The trial of a 65-year-old man charged with one count of rape and two counts sexual assault of his granddaughter has begun in the Suva High Court.
It is alleged that the man had raped and sexually assaulted the 7-year-old girl between 2012 and 2014 in Nasinu.
The second prosecution witness was Doctor Elvira Ongbit from Medical Services Pacific who had examined the victim.
Dr. Ongbit said that she had noted the injuries on the victim.
She further stated that the victim was consistent when telling her story because she had asked the victim several times what had happened.
During cross-examination defence lawyer Filimoni Vosarogo asked Dr. Ongbit if she knew that Medical Services Pacific were being paid by Police for their services under their Memorandum Of Understanding.
Dr. Ongbit says she didn’t know this and that regardless of the NGO getting financial assistance, all sexual assault cases are referred to them for quick service as police complain that it takes a lot of time at CWM Hospital.
The grandfather will give evidence tomorrow.
