The trial of Sangeeta Devi who is charged with the murder of her new born baby has begun in the High Court.
It is alleged that Devi gave birth to the baby on the 9th of January 2016 at her home at Khalsa Road in Suva.
It is alleged she wrapped the baby in a bedsheet and placed the baby in the bathroom.
It is alleged the new born died of suffocation.
Devi is represented by lawyer Mohammed Yunus while the prosecution lawyer is Wakesa Elo.
Second state witness Senior Medical Officer at CWM Hospital, Dr Mairini Rokovunisei told the court that from her professional experience, the mother of the new born baby should have felt signs of pregnancy such as the movement of the baby inside her, given the size of the baby which was 2.5 kilograms.
She said this in court as the defence lawyer had put to her that Sangeeta Devi did not know she was pregnant and did not feel movements inside her.
Dr Rokovunisei says she recalls the case she was handed over from Dr Kitione Waqanisau and that Devi’s husband had given her a carton which contained the dead baby wrapped in a bed sheet.
She said upon examination she had discovered that it was a full term baby which weighed 2.5 kilograms.
First witness, Doctor Waqanisau gave evidence that he was the doctor who had examined Devi that night and that he can confirm that she had delivered a baby.
Prosecution lawyer Wakesa Elo asked if Doctor Waqanisau’s findings on her case had been consistent with a woman not knowing she was pregnant.
Dr Waqanisau had replied that he does not know if Devi had perceived the pregnancy or ignored it but he could confirm that she had given birth.
The trial continues before High Court Judge Justice Vincent Perera.
