In order to make Fiji roads safer and enjoyable for the travelling public, a stakeholders meeting was held at the Nabua Police Station today.
While opening the meeting, Deputy Police Commissioner Isikeli Vuniwaqa highlighted that emphasis for this network is for a common way forward.
He added that the stakeholders have their own information and data but the way forward is how can this information and data be shared amongst the stakeholders and come to common understanding to how to make Fiji roads safer.
Vuniwaqa said for the past five years, an average of 54 deaths occur on our roads every year.
He said in 1996, 111 people died on our roads which is the highest so far.
In 2000, 74 deaths were recorded.
He added that for Fiji an average of 54 deaths is still high.
Director Traffic Mahesh Mishra said so far 16 deaths have occurred in the southern division this year which is a record and alarming number.
So far this year 43 people have lost their lives due to road accident compared to 49 last year.
The stakeholders which participated in the meeting included the Land Transport Authority, the Fiji Roads Authority, the Transport Ministry, the Ministry of Health, the Suva City Council, the Nasinu Town Council and National Fire Authority.
