Today is International Mother Language Day and this was declared by the General Conference of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999.
The Ministry of Education has asked all schools to set aside an hour to involve children in a range of activities to promote the preservation and protection of all mother languages in Fiji.
The team for this year is Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education.
Minister for Education, Dr, Mahendra Reddy says being multilingual opens a host of opportunities for Fijians seeking new and exciting career paths.
He also says being multilingual also encourages global partnership in the sense that Fijians will feel empowered to travel for work and study since language will no longer be a barrier.
Reddy adds schools have been encouraged to celebrate this day while appreciating the richness of Fiji’s cultural diversity.
