Thurston Gardens will soon undergo re-construction after the launching of the draft master plan earlier today.
While launching the master plan, President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said the effort to revitalize the gardens is not only a noble endeavor but an absolute necessity for our present and future generation.
Nailatikau said with the increasing trend of urbanization over generations, the degradation of forest ecosystems, and declining biodiversity, our people are losing their cultural ties to nature and its importance to their daily lives.
Nailatikau said the new Thurston Gardens Master Plan is an opportunity to recreate that special place where we can reconnect with nature.
He said it is important to note that Thurston Gardens is a listed Fiji Heritage Site, together with the adjacent properties of Albert Park and the Grand Pacific Hotel.
He added that a properly formulated master plan, based on thorough and broad consultation, taking into account a range of options will be a fundamental requisite to the worthy objective of returning Thurston Gardens to its former glory and pre-eminent place in the nation’s capital.
