Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Service Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has told parliament that there is no need to protect people if they are not doing their job.
He made this comment while responding to the recommendations of a report by the Public Accounts Committee on the 2007 to 2009 Auditor General’s reports.
Public Accounts Committee Chairman Ashneel Sudhakar told parliament that certain allegations of corruption within the civil service have been referred to FICAC.
He also said they have been notified by FICAC that some cases have been consistently prosecuted in the courts.
Responding to these recommendations, the Minister for Civil Service said a lot is attributed to the lack of ownership and accountability by former or current permanent secretaries who may still be in the civil service.
Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that there may be problems with the accounts because a lot of times what actually happens is that the junior accounts people are actually left to deal with these accounts.
He also said that Permanent Secretaries are Chief Accounting Officers for each of the Ministries and they should be held more accountable.
Sayed-Khaiyum added that another issue is that there has been a lot of people in the accounts section that climb the rank simply because of seniority and not on the capacity or knowledge they have.
