There is a total backlog of 2092 Workers Compensation cases in Fiji as at June this year.
Of this number, 304 accounted for deaths and 1,788 accounted for injuries.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Employment Jone Usamate while speaking at the opening of Phase II Training in the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment for Doctors at Holiday Inn.
He adds that the high numbers will demand their strong willpower and determination in going through the challenge to resolve backlog cases.
Usamate says the training will see to more standardized assessments by medical practitioners which will minimize the disparities which often lead to unnecessary disputes and delays which continues to increase the number of backlog cases.
The workshop aims to help doctors distinguish between impairment and disability, to use the Workcare Guide appropriately and to efficiently compile reports of impairment evaluation for people who get injured at workplaces.
Usamate says it is important to give out compensations as soon as possible so that people who are injured and need the money do not end up in the poverty cycle.
