There have been a total of 118 cases of resisting arrest since 2017 till date.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Defence Ratu Inoke Kubuabola when asked by SODELPA MP Mosese Bulitavu on why police brutalities continue in the country and what actions are being taken to curb and control it.

Kubuabola says it shouldn’t be forgotten that there are cases where police officers are brutally assaulted and seriously injured in the exercise of their duties.

He says there are proactive actions taken by Fiji Police Force  to curb police brutality like strengthening of the Internal Affairs Unit which has ensured swift, fair and transparent investigations.

Kubuabola says there were 1,082 activities such as training awareness and lectures provided to the personnel of the Fiji Police Force which was conducted last year.

He says stringent guidelines are in place to steer police operations and minimize police brutality.

Bulitavu then said that these brutality cases do not happen in the Police Stations but in isolated areas.

Kubuabola then stated that out of the 18,153 cases registered in 2017, there were only 9 police brutality cases.

Kubuabola says they will not condone police brutality and case will be investigated.
