The Department of Energy says that there are companies that invest heavily as independent power producers in the country.
While making the Department’s submission on the Fiji Electricity Authority 2016 Annual Report, the Acting Director Mikaele Belena says this includes the Hydro Fiji LTD development plan to construct the 30 megawatts Namosi Hydro project.
He says the electricity generation mix for 2016 was 63.06 percent from hydro, 45.46 percent from Industrial Diesel Oil, 0.39 percent from wind and 1.1% from Independent Power Producers.
Belena says in order to achieve the 90% energy requirements through renewable sources by 2025, FEA will need to engage with more prospective investors.
Belena says the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement for electricity is solely between the investor and FEA.
