Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho says it all goes back to the way a child is nurtured and guided within their homes that will ultimately decide the path the child follows in life.
While speaking at the launch of the National Young Leaders Dialogue on Policing, Criminology and National Security in Nasova today, Qiliho says the Fiji Police Force needs to hear from the youths about the possible reasons as to why some of their peers are living their life on the wrong side of the law.
He says the Fiji Police Force is the last line of defence, and they will only know of a crime once it has been committed and by then it would have been too late to do anything.
Qiliho adds that is why proactive policing is vital so they are able to put a stop to a crime before it is committed because once the hurt has been inflicted, you can never take away the pain and suffering caused.
He says no matter how much you try, the trauma and experience will be engraved in the victim’s mind for the rest of their life.
Qiliho says the aim of the dialogue is to improve working relationships between the young people and the Fiji Police Force.
He adds we are at a time that we can no longer sugar coat things.
Qiliho says when it comes to issues involving our youth, he takes a particular interest because just like any other parent, he never wants to hear of a child becoming a victim or suspect of a crime.
He says if the future generation does not want to take ownership of their future now, then we are fighting a losing battle.
