The temporary wastewater trunk line which carries all untreated waste from the greater Suva area to the Kinoya Waste Treatment Plant has been completed.
Water Authority of Fiji Chief Executive officer, Opetaia Ravai said this includes the construction of the pumping station which will help move the wastewater through the replacement pipe for the collapsed trunk line section and the pipe itself which has been positioned on the footpath which will connect the Suva main trunk line with that of Kinoya.
Ravai said this is a temporary solution until the Authority can construct a proper structure which can support the main trunk line across the river.
He added that Aerobic digestion, a process that uses oxygen to neutralize waste has been introduced to fight against the odour in Cunningham Creek which is expected to substantially reduce the odour.
Ravai is also urging people living around Cunningham Creek and the greater Laucala Bay area to refrain from swimming, fishing and engaging in other recreational activities until further notice.
