More temporary doctors are now being pulled in to help solve the shortage of doctors in hospitals around the country.
New Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar has told parliament they are pulling in temporary doctors to fill in during busy periods and help remedy the shortage.
She says an arrangement is underway with the Nadi hospital and others will start up around the country on the basis of need.
Akbar says this arrangement will bring in general practioners to support the health sector in critical areas.
She says they are currently working with the Ministry of Civil Service to fill those gaps and so far have approved 879 new positions for Medical Superintendents, Consultants and Medical Interns.
Akbar says only 553 of these positions have been filled.
She says they also want to increase specialised training for nurses and ensure that they paid fairly according to their qualifications.
Akbar says there will be a new plan of action that will put access to quality health care at the centre of every decision.
