Minister for Education Doctor Mahendra Reddy has made it clear that teachers are not allowed to give students detention.
Parents of a school in Suva have raised concerns about their children being given detention after official school hours.
A school official told Fijivillage that the children were given detention for missing classes last week.
Doctor Reddy says concerned students and parents should raise this issue with the Ministry of Education if they come across it.
Reddy says if teachers find students to be misbehaving in their class, they should not give them detention but take them for counseling with the school counselor.
He says they can also be taken to the school principal for counseling.
