A teacher who was found guilty for obtaining a gain from the Ministry of Education will spend one month in prison.
Litiana Rogoyawa Taoi who was found guilty for obtaining a gain of $18,496.94 is sentenced to 17 months and 24 days and the remainder of her sentence has been suspended for three years.
Taoi was charged by FICAC in 2014 after it was discovered that she continued receiving her salary from the Ministry of Education even though she had left teaching and was deemed to have resigned.
While delivering his sentence, Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili stressed that her time in prison is to serve as a warning to other would‑be offenders that such offences will not be condoned.
He also stated that after the one month is served, the balance of the sentence is to be served in the community to enable Taoi to rehabilitate herself.
