“Knowing that we have networks with taxi drivers is great and we want to let the criminal elements know that we have more eyes on the ground by making use of community partnership.”
The Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho made this comment after a taxi driver assisted police officers which led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man who allegedly attacked a 23-year-old student in Suva on Friday early morning.
The 28-year-old taxi driver was driving along the streets of Suva when he noticed three men behaving suspiciously at the Goodenough Street.
The driver then turned on his vehicle headlights and using the car horn he tried to alert others to what was happening.
According to police the three men fled the scene however he managed to follow one of the suspects along the Victoria Parade.
The driver then contacted the police and while following the suspect he found two police officers on patrol and took them in the direction of where the suspect was seen.
The 29-year-old has been arrested and charged with one count of aggravated robbery.
He will be produced at the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon.
