More than 365 families in Tavarau settlement, Ba will for the first time have access to safe and clean drinking water after two new water tanks were provided to them by the government.
Speaking on behalf of the Tavarau community, Chairman of the Lautoka District Advisory Council Faiaaz Ali says people have been sourcing water from a reservoir which is not filtered.
70-year-old Maya Wati who has lived in Tavarau settlement for the last 35 years says this will bring a great relief to the women in their community as they worry about their safety while walking to the reservoir to collect water.
Meanwhile, after 20 years the residents of Kadavu settlement, Tavua will now also have access to safe drinking water.
Resident of Kadavu settlement Esita Waqa says 16 families will benefit from the new water tank.
