A new system under E-ticketing will come into effect in about 12 months where GPS monitoring will also be implemented.
Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says it will be a tap on tap off system which will be possible through the GPS, and it will show where a person gets on and gets off the bus, which will map out the route.
Some USP students had raised the issue on why E-ticketing will be compulsory.
Sayed-Khaiyum says it will become compulsory from the 1st of October and the reason for the reintroduction is that it will help in reducing theft by bus drivers and create more transparency.
Sayed-Khaiyum says there are some places like Narere and Nepani where people complain that there is a shortage of buses but the bus companies say they have space in the buses.
He says this way, the government will know the exact numbers and tell the bus companies if they need to get more buses in that area.
Sayed-Khaiyum says they get a lot of complaints from students that they have to compete with other passengers and sometimes students aren’t even allowed to get on buses because of full paying passengers.
He says it will help the government in planning, which is very important.
Sayed-Khaiyum say the government is also hoping to extend E-ticketing eventually to taxis and boats.
