The Tamavua‑i‑Wai Bridge will undergo weight and lane restrictions taking effect from 8am next Monday.
From 5am to 8pm daily the weight restriction is 20 tonnes.
According to the Fiji Roads Authority, Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge will be reduced to a single lane from 8pm to 5am daily with a weight restriction of 32 tonnes.
FRA Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Moore says they will be carrying out maintenance works to the bridge substructure that will provide support to the deck.
He says their latest inspection has indicated that the bridge needs repairs and whilst the bridge is still serviceable, they believe it is prudent to review the capacity of the bridge with consultants.
Moore adds that upon discussions with LTA and the Road Haulage Association, they have made a decision to reduce traffic to a single lane, controlled by traffic signals at night and early morning to allow heavy vehicles to cross.
He says the single lane and weight restriction will be in place for the next six weeks.
It was earlier confirmed by the CEO that the bridge would be replaced by the third quarter of this year.
Moore told Fijivillage in January this year that the plan is to change the Tamavua‑i‑Wai Bridge in the next 6 months.
At that time he told us that a team was on the ground doing geo‑technical studies on where the bridge would be placed.
We have sent questions to the Fiji Roads Authority as to why they have not replaced the bridge as earlier stated. The FRA CEO had said that they will have a modular bridge by the third quarter of this year.
The Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge is the only point of entry into Suva from the Queens Highway.
