The Australian High Commission said anyone concerned about their relatives in Sydney should try and make contact with them to reassure themselves of their safety.
According to ABC news, two hostages and the gunman are dead after a 16-hour siege at a cafe in Sydney's CBD.
Hostages ran from the building and paramedics treated and transported a number of them to hospital but their condition is unknown.
The man responsible was earlier named as Man Haron Monis, a self-declared Iranian cleric on bail for a string of violent offences.
The centre of the city was put in lockdown when the gunman seized the hostages early yesterday morning, forcing some of them to hold up a black Islamic banner at the window of the Lindt cafe.
Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott says it was profoundly shocking that people were being held hostage by an armed person claiming political motivation.
The cafe is located in Martin Place, a busy shopping area in Sydney’s financial district.
