A suspect is still under police guard at the Nadi Hospital in relation to an attempted robbery at the Areotown Mobil Service Station on Sunday.

A police officer was injured during a confrontation with five masked men who were attempting to rob the Service Station on Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 3am when five masked men threatened the 35-year-old security officer and the 25-year-old cashier and attempted to steal the cash register containing $500.

The team of police officers who were gathering intelligence on the planned robbery confronted the masked men.

A police officer was injured after stones and broken bottles were thrown at them.

The remaining four fled in a rental vehicle which was later found abandoned at Denarau Road.

The group was believed to have been planning a series of robberies and the investigation team has managed to gather information about their identities as investigations continue.

ACP Henry Brown said Police officers are often faced with situations that put their own safety and lives at risk.

He added that despite the criticism and allegations levelled at some police officers, majority are working tirelessly to keep their communities safe and are putting their lives on the line on a daily basis.
