Minister for Education Rosy Akbar

Minister for Education Rosy Akbar has highlighted that students as young as 5 years old are selling their e-transport cards at bus stands for as little as $5 regardless of the amount of the money in card.

Akbar made these comments while talking on the 2019/2020 National Budget in parliament.

The minister says there have been instances where an elder sibling borrows the younger sibling’s cards to attend university although the elder sibling already has transport assistance or they are not entitled to it.

Akbar says the Land Transport Authority has caught 7 instances of such cases.

She says LTA has had to hire more enforcement officers to tackle this issue.

Akbar also highlighted they are investigating ways they can tighten the transport assistance scheme and they will be making announcements on this soon.
