It’s over a month now and no work has been seen on the new Rewa Bridge in relation to the installation of a pedestrian fence.
The Fiji Roads Authority released a statement on the 23rd of last month stating that it will soon install a pedestrian fence on the new Rewa Bridge that will provide a secondary barrier between pedestrians and vehicles.
Since then, Fijivillage has consistently pursued the matter with the FRA and the last response was that the erection of panels on the bridge is expected to be completed before the end of this month.
Acting CEO Robert Sen had said that the FRA was making arrangements for the fabrication and installation of a ‘guide fence’ on the new Rewa Bridge.
A number of parents continue to raise concerns that their children are not safe on the new four lane Rewa bridge as they are walking just beside speeding vehicles.
A concerned parent told us that the Rewa Bridge is not just any small bridge that hundreds of students of Dilkusha Methodist Kindergarten, Dilkusha High and Lelean Memorial School can quickly walk across.
The parent says that children are sometimes playful and can push each other while walking, and this can result in a student landing in front of a vehicle on the longest bridge in the country.
We have again sent questions to the FRA about this serious issue as hundreds of Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary school students continue to walk on the bridge daily without a pedestrian fence.
