The authorities at Nadi International Airport will be able to conduct inspections more effectively since the State of Israel handed a Rapiscan X-ray machine worth approximately $250,000 to the Fijian Government.
The machine will be used by Biosecurity Authority of Fiji and the Fiji Revenue Customs Service.
While receiving the Rapiscan X-ray machine FRCA CEO Visvanath Das says that each day millions of bags and parcels across the globe are inspected at the country’s borders and this means that these inspections should be carried out effectively and efficiently.
Das says that the Rapiscan x-ray delivers high quality results and alerts on the presence of explosives and narcotics.
He adds that for a number of years, Fiji has been termed as the hub of the Pacific and at the same time it has been used as a transit point for delivery of illegal and dangerous drugs and other banned items.
The CEO stresses that with the installation of a Rapiscan x-ray machine the detection rate will increase.
Israeli Ambassador to Fiji Tibor Schlosser says the government of Israel is happy to assist Fiji and highlights that the machine will also assist Fiji’s tourism industry as the tourists will feel safe to travel to Fiji.
