The state land lease arrears currently stands at $24 million.
While appearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Ministry of Lands Deputy Secretary Malakai Nalawa said the arrears stood at $29 million last year.
Nalawa said they are expected to clear 90% of the arrears by the end of this year.
Committee member Aseri Radrodro raised the question on what is the basis of introducing the arrears amnesty period.
Nalawa said the reason is to entice the tenants to pay up.
Radrodro then asked him why the Ministry of Lands is trying to entice the tenants when most of them are companies and organisations that also have payments with banks.
Nalawa said they do this to treat all the tenants fairly.
