The Speaker of Parliament, Doctor Jiko Luveni has ruled that if any parliamentarian takes any issues of the Speaker and parliament outside the parliament, the Speaker’s authority will also follow them there.
Opposition MPs today asked the Speaker to look into this matter as they said that parliamentary privileges do not extend to parliamentarians making comments outside parliament, and parliament is not allowed to cite Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the comments he made at the SODELPA public meeting in Makoi last week.
Opposition MP, Niko Nawaikula maintains that this matter needs to be addressed.
Opposition MP, Mosese Bulitavu joined Nawaikula in making the call.
Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum then said that the Parliamentary Privileges Committee report on Ratu Naiqama’s case will be presented today and the MPs should wait for the debate on this.
The Speaker says her ruling is clear.
