Some students of the University of Fiji have raised concerns about the university not having proper facilities.
The concerns were raised with the Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the 2018-2019 National Budget Consultations at the University of Fiji.
Two students raised issues that the university does not have enough resources, proper parking, there is no place allocated for students to socialize or study together and the canteen does not have non vegetarian items.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the universities are academic institutes which need to be independent. He says the government cannot tell them what to do but it can raise these issues with them when their budget is being allocated.
Another student had said that the university lacks resource textbooks for the iTaukei language studies. She had said that the library does not have adequate resources and also if the library could be extended.
The Minister had replied that the University of Fiji is the only university in Fiji that offers a Degree in iTaukei language studies and he had requested that the student make a list of the textbooks that are not available so he could look into the matter.
