Deputy Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Joe Kulinidilo is urging representatives from Lau to work together with the correction centres so that the families of the offenders welcome them back after they have served their time.
The Corrections Service has held a symposium for stakeholders from the Lau Group in the hope to counter this problem.
Kulinidilo believes that some inmates tend to go back to crime after being rejected by their families.
The Deputy Commissioner stated that of the 14 provinces, the province of Lau has the second largest number of inmates in the correction centres.
Kulinidilo says that there are 118 people from Lau, 82 of which are still awaiting trial and 75 percent of them are between the age of 17 to 35 years.
He adds that they have changed their strategic goal, from in care, to through care, which focuses on rehabilitation not only in the Correction Centres but also at the homes of the inmates.
