Good news for the people of Taveuni as for the first time the Fiji Electricity Authority will provide electricity in some densely populated areas in Taveuni.
And this is not far away, as people in Taveuni can expect electricity supply from as early as December this year.
FEA’s CEO Hasmukh Patel says the Somosomo Mini Hydro Scheme has already been built by the Chinese government under a grant scheme.
While speaking in the Public Accounts Committee Meeting, Patel says it was an instruction from the government for them to move into Taveuni.
Patel says they will be putting up a diesel power station which will work in conjunction with the mini Hydro.
He says initially they will only be providing electricity in some areas of Taveuni and gradually other areas will also be covered.
Areas between Taveuni Airport and Waiyevo are expected to get energized by this December.
Meanwhile, FEA has confirmed that they are connecting around 5,000 new customers to the FEA grid every year.
