To help them better understand their role, Supervisors in the Social Welfare Department as well as other non government organisations from all over Fiji are currently undergoing training at University of the South Pacific Laucala Campus.
Dr Litea Meo-Sewabau Coordinator Social Work Program USP says social workers help people who have been through traumatic experiences and as a result are often in need of counseling as well.
She says in the past the issue was that their students were sent in the field without any form of supervision.
She says the aim of this workshop is to help supervisors help social workers cope with their experiences.
Director Social Welfare Department Rupeni Fatiaki says supervisors need to be aware of internal issues as well as those faced by their clients and to be able to deal with it.
Fatiaki says this is the first workshop of its kind.
This workshop was organized by the USP Social Work Programme in partnership with the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and Massey University.
