Minister for Social Welfare Dr. Jiko Luveni has confirmed that only those who are not receiving any form of superannuation fund pensions will qualify for the Social Pension Scheme.
Luveni said this pension will be given to those that are 70 years and over.
Luveni added for married couples, if the husband is getting a pension the wife will still qualify if she is not under any pension scheme.
Meanwhile, earlier this year the government approved an increase in the Social Pension Scheme from thirty dollars to fifty dollars a month. This will come into effect next year.
The Social Pension Scheme was introduced this year and has a budgetary allocation of $3.2 million.
The Ministry of Social Welfare is currently assisting 9,675 senior citizens.
