A man that has been labelled as a serial rapist will be sentenced next Thursday by High Court Judge Justice Chamath Morais.
Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Shyamala Alagendra today called the man who has been found guilty of rape, sexual assault and attempted rape a serial rapist and paedophile.
While giving her sentencing submissions before Justice Morais today, Alagendra submitted an overall sentence of 25 years or more.
She says in this case there were three victims and asked the court to consider the gravity of the offence and the harm that was caused.
Alagendra also said the man posed a great threat to society and labelled him as a serial rapist of children.
The Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions also said there was an epidemic of child rape in this country and the condemnation of judges will only be made clear if they sentence appropriately.
In her sentencing submissions, Defence lawyer Shantel Hazelman submitted that the sentence should fall within the tariff which is 11 to 20 years.
She says there was no pre-planning and no medical report to show there was actual violence to the victims.
Hazelman also asked the court to take into consideration the time the man spent on remand.
She also asked the court not to use her client’s right to defend himself in this case as a show of no remorse.
The man has been convicted of three counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape.
He raped and sexually assaulted a boy and two girls between January 2014 and December 2015.
The victims were 11, 15 and 13 years old at the time of the incidents.
The man was the uncle of the 15-year-old girl and was the neighbour of the 11-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl.
In the eight separate counts, the man raped the victims, showed them his private parts, forced them to touch his private parts and also did sexual acts in front of them.
The man’s bail has been extended.
