The Ministry of Employment has revamped their selection criteria in order to minimize the abuse of the Seasonal Worker Scheme.
This comes after seven Fijians who went to Australia under the seasonal worker scheme walked off the farm after complaining they were underpaid and mistreated.
The Ministry of Employment says one of the workers returned home while six are still in Australia.
According to the Ministry they are adding value to the Pre-departure training programs to include work ethics especially on the spiritual value aspect so that these workers understand the importance of this program not only for their individual development but in terms of contributing to national building.
The Ministry says there is a four day training program which includes employer expectation, government expectation, productivity, savings and budgeting.
It adds that these specific criteria ensures that they select the right people to undertake the specific tasks needed to do fruit picking, which involves long working hours, strenuous activities undertaken daily over seven months, including working under drastic weather conditions.
