Sections of Fiji's cattle industry are being threatened by the re‑emergence of Brucellosis, a bacterial disease found in the reproductive areas of animals but which can be contracted by humans.
Ministry of Agriculture Director of Animal Health Tomasi Tunabuna says at least five farms have been identified to have cattle that have contracted brucellosis.
Compared to September last year, only two properties had been identified as infected.
Tunabuna says there are more cases in September this year because they have started conducting tests in non-high risk areas.
He says they have been able to maintain a low number of brucellosis cases despite some of their staff being involved in rehabilitation works after TC Winston.
In the last two years, 34 farms were identified by the Department of Animal Health and Production as high‑risk areas for brucellosis.
Monitoring continues for Dairy Farms in Tailevu and Naitasiri.
