The releases of the Wolbachia carrying mosquitoes was celebrated since its first release in Fiji in July and they have been released to reduce the burden of Mosquito borne diseases in the country.
Wolbachia Ambassador and former National Sevens player Jasa Veremalua officiated at the ceremony in Sukuna Park.
These groups of Mosquitos have been infused with the Wolbachia bacteria which is a naturally occurring bacteria in insects that help stop the spread of dengue fever, chikungunya and zika viruses.
Veremalua says that he is proud to represent the World Mosquito Program which is aiming to provide a safe environment for people from Mosquitos borne diseases.
Meanwhile the Wolbachia carrying mosquitoes that continue to be released were first released in Tamavua Village in July this year.
Wolbachia is safe for humans, animals and the environment.
According to the World Mosquito Program, two independent risk assessments have been conducted, both of which gave an overall risk rating of the lowest possible for the release of mosquitoes with Wolbachia.
