School Principals, Head Teachers and Counsellors are undergoing training sessions on counselling so they can address the emotional needs of students and eradicate student suicides.
The session is being conducted by a Psychologist from the New South Wales Education Department, Vijay Kumar.
While speaking at the National Counselling Workshop at the Suva Vocational Centre, Minister for Education, Doctor Mahendra Reddy says the concepts taught at this training session will be taken by the school heads and modified to suit the different situations in schools.
Reddy also says that parents play an important role and they must spend quality time with their children as it makes a lot of difference.
He says at the beginning of next year, school prefects and form captains will also be trained by the school counsellors.
They will then bring this matter to school teachers and counsellors.
There are 55 participants in today’s workshop.
Nine other National Counselling workshops will be held across the country over the next two weeks.
