Attorney General and Finance Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum today reminded the staff of Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority that as regulatory agencies, they have to ensure that they have efficient systems in place.
He made the comments during the launching of the “ASYCUDA WORLD” which is an automated system for Customs Data.
Sayed-Khaiyum stressed that Fiji needs to learn some fundamental lessons from countries like Singapore and Mauritius as the way their regulatory agencies conduct themselves is far different from the way regulatory agencies in Fiji conduct themselves.
He said some of it has to do with the fact that Fiji does not have access to technology but also in terms of the attitude towards complying with the law and enforcing the law.
The “ASYCUDA WORLD” customs system which is used in 93 countries will provide 15 million customs clearance operations annually.
It also brings in better security features.
