SODELPA MP Aseri Radrodro today withdrew his motion regarding dentists after Minister for Civil Service Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum gave a detailed explanation about the civil service reform.
Radrodro started taking about his motion by saying that his motion is about ensuring dentists are also cared for and looked after in terms of their personal emolument.
Radrodro had moved that dentists’ emoluments be increased by $500,000 by stating that little attention is being given to dentists’ emoluments.
Radrodro says dentists hold one of the specialised professions in the medical area but he thinks with the reforms that has been taking place, very little has been given for their personal emoluments.
Radrodro says most of the time dentists have to pay from their pocket in terms of attending to development related to their field.
Minister for Civil Service, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum then stated that civil service reform is ongoing where some ministries are being restructured, some have their plans and there is also a period of salary adjustments, however they need to carry out proper assessments in relation to the market as they have with the doctors.
He says the dentists are going through the same process.
Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted that they have also not distinguished between those who are dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists adding there is a huge kerfuffle going on between these major groups.
He then told Radrodro that one cannot come and say to increase the salary by half million dollars as each of them their own requirements and specific qualifications.
Radrodro then withdrew his motion.
Meanwhile, Health Minister, Rosy Akbar says they are anticipating to run Makoi maternity low risk services for 24 hours in the near future. She says it is already open as part of 12 hour services.
Akbar says they have finalized the recruitment of the midwives that was the major issue.
