J Santaram Supermarket bulk store fire

The Suva City Council has said it is waiting on clearance from the National Fire Authority and the police to start clearing up the debris from J Santaram Supermarket bulk store at Robertson Road in Suva, which was destroyed in a fire last Saturday.

Concerns are being raised about the stench from the bulk store which may also pose a health hazard.

SCC says it sent people to assess the site this morning and it has also recommended some waste management contractors to the owners of the supermarket.

The council says they are assessing how quickly they can move in to help clear the debris which can affect the health of the public.

Meanwhile, the National Fire Authority is yet to confirm the cause of the fire.

The fire also destroyed the top floor of Lotus Garments three storey building.

No one was injured in the fire.
