Rural women are leaders, entrepreneurs and service providers, and their contributions are vital to the well‑being of families, communities and economies and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for government.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa while handing over 4 sewing machines during the visit of the REACH team at Yanuya village in Malolo for the women of Tavua and Yanuya villages.
Vuniwaqa stated that the key target was to provide opportunities to increase women's active participation and to enhance their livelihood through an added platform.
She also encouraged the women's groups to identify areas of need for economic empowerment and to reach out to the Ministry's offices around the country and ask for assistance.
Vuniwaqa says the positive support of the men in their lives and the Vanua was critical if women were to realize their full potential.
Mrs Luisa Taga the Radini Vanua of Yanuya and president of Yanuya Women's group said that the sewing machines are a blessing for her group adding that the women in Yanuya will be able to develop their sewing skills and earn an income through tailoring.
She said that women can also sew school uniforms and attires for special events in the village which will further help them become financially independent.
