Speeding drivers have become one of the biggest daily challenges faced by road construction crews working between Seaqaqa and Labasa Town.
Fulton Hogan Hiways Senior Construction Supervisor North, Wayne Whittingham says this has resulted in some near misses.
Whittingham says that an average of two speeding drivers were reported per week to the Land Transport Authority, apart from flagging drivers to slow down on the 30km/h work area.
Whittingham adds that motorists are disregarding their workers and their own safety and this is not only confined to the North as workers in the Central and Eastern division are facing the same challenge of speeding drivers.
He says that their temporary traffic management signs and cones are put up one kilometre before the actual worksite, yet drivers still give excuses that they did not properly read the signs.
Whittingham has acknowledged other drivers for their tolerance and patience and continues to urge all motorists to adhere to the speed limit and traffic management signs for their own safety and the safety of the workers.
The Fiji Roads Authority had earlier stated that they have a large construction programme to complete both the sealed and unsealed networks in the North before the end of the year.
