Road conditions in the Northern Division was one of the main issues highlighted with the Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum during the 2017/2018 budget consultation.
The President of Labasa Chamber of Commerce Satish Kumar says in the last 50 years, they have been requesting for all the previous governments’ to have a bypass road but nothing has been done.
He requested the Minister if bypass roads can be made and roads be tar-sealed to create a better environment in and around Labasa town.
The Head Girl of Seaqaqa Central College says that roads in Vunivere, Soleve and Navidamu are in poor condition whilst dust and muddy water splashes on students uniforms during rainy conditions.
The Head Girl of Nadogo Central College asked the Minister what government can do to solve road and transportation problems for Nadogo students.
She says the last bus that reaches Nadogo Central College is at about 5.30pm and they reach their home at about 8.45pm.
The Head Girl also raised the issue that there is limited bus services for Visogo students.
She also highlighted that there is a need for a bailey bridge at Wainikoro river as some students are travelling in boats.
Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum says he will look into the issues.
Meanwhile, Sayed‑Khaiyum says the construction of the new Labasa bridge will start in the second half of the 2017/2018 financial year.
