The risk of the whole of Lautoka City being flooded with waste water has been addressed by the Water Authority of Fiji.
Authority CEO Opetaia Ravai says the waste water pumping station at Walu in Lautoka is currently running on a single pump.
He says this major repair work is essential, especially as they are entering the rainy season.
Ravai says if the single pump currently in operation shuts down for any reason, there is the very real danger that the whole of Lautoka City could be flooded with wastewater, as well as sewage overflow into the sea.
He says the installation of the second pump at the Walu Main wastewater pump station in Lautoka is expected to improve the waste water service provided by the Water Authority.
He says one of the waste water pumps will continue to be in operation while the repair works will be taking place.
Ravai said the Authority is working closely with the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Health and Medical Services as well as the Lautoka City Council regarding the repair works.
He says 11 WAF crew members will be conducting the repair works and the Authority has also hired two bail trucks to bail wastewater during the repair works.
Ravai adds the installation of a third pump is planned in the near future.
