More than 40 households in Daku village in Tailevu will no longer be threatened by the rise in sea level after the launching of their floodgates.
While speaking at the launch, US Ambassador to Fiji, Judith Cefkin said she is thrilled to participate in this event which is a response to the threat of climate change.
The community chairman, Apolosa Gumatua thanked US AID for providing financial assistance to meet the cost of repairing and refurbishing the existing floodgates and the construction of their fifth floodgate along the dikes around their village.
He said their village is one of those affected through the rise in sea level that brings in salt water which is a great threat to their village life and their subsistence farming.
The total cost of the project is $110,000 and was fully funded by the USAID under the Coastal Community Adaption Project.
Meanwhile USAID also gave $110,000 for the construction of floodgates at the village of Vunisinu in Tailevu.
