Rewa River water level continues to rise

A flood warning remains in force for low-lying areas adjacent to Rewa river and downstream of Nausori town.

The water level at the Rewa river was 5.64 metres earlier this morning which is 1.14 metres above warning level and decreasing.

There is also a flood warning in place for low-lying areas and small streams adjacent and downstream of Rakiraki town, Wailotua station, Nayavu station, Navolau station and Wainibuka river.

A flood alert remains in force for low lying areas in Waimanu and Nabukaluka.

The Nadi Weather Office says heavy rain is expected to continue today and we will experience occasional showers from tomorrow.

It is still raining up in the highlands.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Office earlier confirmed that the Nausori Health Centre was temporarily relocated to Vunivivi Methodist Church Hall.

Only emergency outpatients were treated at the Vunivivi Methodist Church Hall while maternity cases were transferred to CWM hospital.

The National Disaster Management Office says the Nausori Health Centre will resume services from this hour.

Situation Update:

Central division:

Access to thousands of people in Koronivia and Lokia has been cut off as flood waters have surrounded their homes.

Flood waters have also entered a number of houses.

Our reporter on the ground, Dhanjay Deo says people have been affected by flood waters since midday yesterday and the water is not receding.

Affected people are taking shelter at their neighbours and relatives places who are on higher grounds.

Lokia road in Nausori is closed to all traffic as it flooded.

Our reporter on the ground Roneel Narayan says flood waters have entered some of the houses.

LDS Church in Lokia and Nakaikogo Primary School have been opened as evacuation centres.

Heavy goods vehicles can have access to a short cut which is from FNU Agricultural Farm to the FNU Koronivia Campus.

However, there is some water on this road.

Meanwhile, Cobbett Avenue Flat in Sawani is still flooded and the water has just started receding.

This has been confirmed by the Naitasiri District Advisory Councillor Mahendra Prasad Chaudhry.

In Nukutubu, Rewa - at least 3 families are now staying with relatives after flood waters entered the village last night.

A resident says flood waters only entered 3 of the houses that were located in the low lying areas.

Lal Singh Road in Waila, Nausori is closed to all traffic.

Flood waters entered some houses last night and some families have moved to high ground.

 

Roads Update:

Motorists are also advised that the road from Sawani to Nausori is still flooded.

Kings Road is open as Korovou Town and the Wailotua Flats are now open to motorists.

The Kasavu Landslide, located north of the Kasavu and Baulevu Road Junction on Kings Road is under 24 hour monitoring with traffic controllers onsite.

It is currently open to traffic and operating as a single lane with the potential for full closure if there are further slips.

The Queens road is open with single lanes in most places but it is all open to traffic.
 

3,090 families are still living in tents.

This has been revealed by DISMAC director, Akapusi Tuifagalele. 

He says 223 families are living in tents in the Central Division, 224 families in the Eastern division, 158 families in the Northern division while 2,475 families are living in tents in the Western division.
