The revival of the Fiji Law Society is now underway as more than 100 members had the society’s Annual General Meeting over the weekend looking at their membership, the state of their financial accounts and plans for the future.
New Fiji Law Society President Peter Knight said the society which is the voice of legal practitioners in the country was effectively defunct over the past few years.
Knight who is part of the society’s revival team has already held meetings with the Chief Justice Anthony Gates and Chief Registrar Yohan Liyange.
He said they had fruitful discussions and relationship between the bench and the bar has improved.
The Law Society is now planning to have a meeting with the new Attorney General Faiyaz Koya.
On the Law Society’s finances, Knight said they are facing difficulties in getting some records relating to some expenses after 2008.
Knight said they have sought the assistance of their bankers and the matter has also been referred to a chartered accounting firm.
Knight said the Society’s bank balance is still healthy however they need to conduct a full audit.
Membership of the Law Society is now voluntary compared to the previous legislation where membership was compulsory.
The Society used to issue legal practicing certificates to the lawyers but it is now issued by the Chief Registrar under the Legal Practitioners Decree.
