Fiji Sugar Corporation Manager Energy Projects, Muthu Nambiayapan says that revenue opportunity in power export is almost equal to revenue from raw-sugar for FSC.
While making FSC’s submission to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, Nambiayapan says that maximizing power sales revenue is the way forward.
Nambiayapan says that sugar cane has 25 percent bagasse which can be used as fuel for boilers.
He says that bagasse is used for producing electricity and heat required for sugarcane process and by optimizing conversion of bagasse into heat energy, FSC can minimize power generation and at the same time meet process heat requirements.
Nambiayapan adds that excess power generated can be exported to the national grid.
He says that FSC has installed a Condensing Extraction Turbine in the Labasa Mill which increased the power export to FEA by 30 percent and FEA’s diesel generation is reduced by 60 percent.
From the end of June 2017, the Labasa Mill will be exporting power to the grid throughout the year and will cover 90 percent of the power requirement for Labasa power distribution system.
